find the definition of Jihad as “a holy war undertaken by Muslims against
non-believers”. This is a very poor definition. Before trying to define what
Jihad is, we should first define what it is NOT.
Jihad is NOT terrorism.
Jihad is NOT killing innocent people
Jihad is NOT the strong bullying the weak
Jihad is NOT collateral damage
Jihad is NOT Holy War
Jihad is NOT blowing up one’s self (Suicide is a sin in Islam)
Jihad is NOT flying a plane into a building packed with civilians
Jihad is NOT fighting out of anger and hatred
Jihad is NOT killing others just because they don’t agree with you
Jihad is NOT killing others just because they are not Muslims
"If anyone killed an innocent it would be as if he had killed the whole of mankind. And one who saved a life would be as if he had saved the lives of all mankind"
- The Noble Qur'an 5 : 32 -
Jihad has many forms
- Jihad bil qalb
- Jihad bil lisan
- Jihad bil qalam
- Jihad bil yad
- Jihad bis saif
As a student, the main jihad for us is jihad bil qalb and jihad bil qalam.
Jihad bil qalb is jihad refraining oneself from whispers of Syaitan. This process involves allowing Islam to transform one's soul to achieving internal peace..
Next jihad bil qalam involves scholarly research of Islam in aiding the spread and defence of Islam and publishing articles in clearing misconceptions and correction lies against Islam. As a student, let us improve our knowledge either islamic studies or other studies to spread Islam in future. Study hard and smart for Islam!
In addition, other than the above jihad, students can do jihad bil yad and jihad bil lisan at the same time. Jihad bil yad is jihad by action rather than words. For examples it is include giving charity to the needy and helping others who need help. Jihad bil lisan is jihad by speeches, lectures or debates. It often overlaps with Da'wah.
In a nutshell, what is our duty? we are Da'ie! Let's spread Islam together and jihad fisabilillah!
